Every parent of young children has a fleeting moment in time to utterly protect the beautiful innocence of childhood. Technology pushes and accelerates things in all areas. It's great when it comes to making cars or surgery safer, but not when robbing our children of their unique season to experience the pure joy of wonder, hope, and dreams. Even as adults, we find technology getting in the way of relationships, productive use of time, and most importantly, the simplicity of nature and inner peace. There's no place where acceleration of life has more of a negative impact than shortening childhood innocence.
Adulthood comes all too quickly. The freedom it promised is soon dwarfed by constant awareness of problems, strife, and chaos. As I watched my friend's son teach me how to assemble his puzzles, I remembered just a bit of how I loved being a small boy. My imagination was incredibly active. I dreamed of so many wonderful things, and pretended a big shipping box was a rocket ship to the moon. Our television programs and commercials were simple and funny without being off-color.
Whether it's with your own children, or around those of friends, let's just hop into their world of discovery, keeping it free from our harshness. Rather than beginning to program them into our world of unrest, let's play in theirs. We just may find it's a great healer for ourselves!
