Often the potentials in developing youth are flittered away. It's so easy to turn on passive entertainment and get drawn into other's issues and chatter. Yet, I salute families who encourage their children to explore and develop skills around their inborn talents. Yes, you must structure "your" habits in the home to model the value of study, focus, and minimizing electronic time wasters. No skilled artist can binge watch TV. Those high on the joy of learning and discovery find one lifetime too short to waste, and spend time productively.
One of the reasons I love photographing youth in the arts is the opportunity to reflect their beauty back the artist and their parents. They see art's legacy being carried on through themselves.
I salute these artists and families for fostering skills to add beauty to a turbulent world. Whether in dance, music, painting, or other art forms, human potential flourishes. This happens only through removal of distractions, study of skilled artists, and encouragement. Once begun, it feeds on itself, as they develop abilities taking them far above life's humdrum to a world of creative magic. They experience flow, where time merges with infinity....
