Covid protocols have impacted every area of our lives, from health and death, to loss of business and freedoms. There isn't one area of life where we've seen truly "normal" since the beginning of this chapter in world history.
Anyone who knows me will tell you I'm a relational person. It's why I enjoyed being a physical therapist, and why I now love being a photographer. Seeing the expressions on people's faces in response to our presence and words is the truest form of communication. We find, in the eyes and smiles, the most important forms of human connection, even surpassing words.
For over a year now, we've had to look at masked faces. Yes, our verbal intonations and content has been important, but don't we all miss seeing the subtle forms of interpersonal connection only possible seeing someone's entire face? Seeing other people smile always lights up my heart, as I'm sure it does yours.
I truly believe money and success will never be the last things in our thoughts when it's our time to say good-by to this life. In fact, it's at that moment that many will discover they were the least important things. What we all will remember are the faces of those who loved us, encouraged us, and made us laugh.
May the pretty face in the above image remind us all of the incredible beauty and magic found in the face, and especially the wonderful connection through the eyes. We all hope and pray that we'll soon be able to see everyone's smiles again. In the meantime, thank God for beautiful portraits. We don't have to wear masks to look at them for as long as we wish!
